Shoko Ikeda was born in 1975 and grew up in Kyoto. She first aspired to become an animator while watching the OVA Gunbuster (Top o Nerae!, Dir. Hideaki Anno, 1988-1989). She began working at Kyoto Animation in 1996 after studying in the Animator Course at Yoyogi Animation Academy’s Osaka campus. She made her debut as an animation director when Kyoto Animation was contracted to animate some episodes of the TV anime Inuyasha, which had begun airing in 2000. The protagonist as animated in the episodes contracted out to Kyoto Animation gained a reputation for being the cutest portrayal of the main character in the series, which in turn resulted in Ikeda’s name becoming well-known among the anime’s fans. She went on to work as character designer, chief animation director, and animator for the TV anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu, 2006), one of Kyoto Animation’s signature works. The characters’ dance in the show’s opening sequence became a sensation. She also was in charge of character design and served as chief animation director for the Sound! Euphonium (Hibike! Yūfoniamu) series, which began airing in 2015, in addition to receiving theatrical film adaptations. This series became a hit, spanning three TV anime seasons, four theatrical films, and one spin-off film (As of April 2025). Within the company, she was known for uplifting the mood of the team by expressing her passion for her work through both her demeanor and her words. Having experienced childbirth over the course of her animation career, she strongly wished for animation production not to just be considered a temporary job for women, and she fought to create an environment in which her juniors could continue working even after getting married and having children. In addition to her work as a creator, she also served as a board member at Kyoto Animation. In 2019, she tragically passed away at the young age of forty-four in the Kyoto Animation arson attack.
